Event at Six Nations Polytechnic start of Local Ideas Tour.

Brantford, On – Federal New Democrat Candidate Marc Laferriere will kick off a “Local Ideas Tour” on Thursday May 27th with a visit from the NDP Aboriginal Commission. This is the first of several events that Laferriere will focus on during the summer designed to bring local ideas to his platform.
Laferriere was inspired to begin this ideas tour after meeting with Obama Campaign Strategist Marshall Ganz this month.
“We talked a great deal about grassroots organizing in Brant and the importance of really engaging people’s lived experience,” Laferriere said. “There are great ideas in this riding that should help shape Federal policy.”
The Aboriginal Commission is a committee of the Ontario NDP that does outreach into aboriginal communities, policy development, and procedural work to create a welcoming environment for the participation of Aboriginal peoples in the political process. Laferriere sits on the Committee as an associate member.
“When we had our anti-HST tour, we went to Six Nations. One of the things we heard was that there are opportunities to work together, but we have to put in the time. Open ears make for good allies. No topic is off limits,” said Laferriere.
Aboriginal Commission Co-Chair Cameron Holmstrom commented on the trip by saying, “I’m looking forward to meeting with people in the community and hearing what they have to say. We are coming to listen and get perspectives, that frankly; most people in government won’t listen to.”
The Commission already has confirmed meetings with Brant Native Housing, Woodland Cultural Centre, Brant CAS Native Services Branch and will be hosting a listening meeting open to the public from 5:30pm – 7:30pm at Six Nations Polytechnic.
